Winter Jazzfest is
celebrating its tenth anniversary with five nights of dynamic jazz in New York
City.
Le Poisson Rouge will feature
a kickoff concert by Bobby Previte’s group, Terminals,
with Nels Cline, John Medeski, So Percussion, and Helado Negro as the opening
act, on January 7th.
Blue Note Records 75th
Anniversary Concert will take place on January 8th at The Town Hall, featuring
Robert Glasper and Jason Moran, with special guests, Ravi Coltrane, Bilal, Eric
Harland and Alan Hampton.
Blue Note Records will
continue its 75th anniversary celebration on January 9th
at Le Poisson Rouge, featuring the Revive Big Band, with special guests Bilal
and Dr. Lonnie Smith, plus the Wallace Roney Orchestra playing Wayne Shorter’s
compositions, Universe, Twin Dragons
and Legend, never released music
written for Miles Davis, conducted by David Weiss.
There will be a two-night music
marathon in eight Greenwich Village venues, featuring over ninety, yes, ninety
jazz groups, on January 10th and 11th. Venues are Le
Poisson Rouge, The Bitter End, The Blue Note, Judson Church, Subculture, Bowery
Electric, Zinc Bar and the NYU Lounge.
The two-night music marathon
features a phenomenally stellar line up of jazz groups, of incredible, intriguing
musical variety and looks to be two remarkable evenings for jazz lovers, not to
be missed. This is an ambitious lineup and the most impressive over all to date
for Winter Jazzfest. Just a handful of the remarkable performers are: Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society; Henry
Threadgill’s “Ensemble Double-Up” In
Remembrance of Lawrence Butch Morris, Elliott Sharp’s Orchestra Carbon, Michele
Rosewoman’s New Yor-Uba; Slavic Soul Party! Plays Ellington: The Far East Suite; Roy Hargrove
Quintet; Rene Marie; Don Byron’s Six Musician Group; Hypnotic Brass Ensemble; Matthew
Shipp Trio; Tim Berne Snakeoil; No BS! Brass; ABRAXAS- John Zorn’s Book of
Angels by Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, and so many more fabulous musicians.
