Colorful and eclectic Portland, Oregon gypsy band, Vagabond Opera, performed together with special guest and one of Seattle’s favorite burlesque artists and producers, Miss Lily Verlaine, in two, New York City showcases, at Joe’s Pub and the Highline Ballroom, especially for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) Conference, in January, 2010.
Verlaine flew out from Seattle especially for her cameo appearances with the band, complete with a sumptuous, multi-textural, specially designed, new costume and outrageous wig, built for the occasion by Seattle burlesque performance colleague and professional wig-maker, Ben de la Crème.
Vagabond Opera (www.vagabondopera.com) performs engaging, exotic and uproarious original songs, with a sense of abandon, in a number of languages, with a combination of a very circus like, Eastern European folk, klezmer, opera, steam punk, jazz, cabaret vibe, featuring accordion, piano, two cellos, bass, drums and saxophone. The beautiful Lily Verlaine (www.lilyverlaine.com) (who produces the very popular, annual performances of the Burlesque Alice in Wonderland and the Burlesque Nutcracker, back in Seattle) added some spice as a surprise at the end of each performance, with her graceful, coquettish, slightly naughty burlesque striptease performance.
Opening for Vagabond Opera and Lily Verlaine at Joe’s Pub, was popular, versatile, New York cabaret/rock, performance artist/vocalist, comedic, drama diva, Lady Rizo. Rizo belts out standards, soul tunes and specializes in getting down with all out arrangements of 1980’s pop tunes (www.ladyrizoandtheassettes.com).
